In this section of the course, you will be introduced to acronyms and abbreviations, you will need to know in order to pass medications. Before we look at medication specific acronyms. Let’s look at the general ones found on this page. BCAL is Bureau of Children and Adult licensing, which is the state agency which issues your home, its license.

 AFC stands for adult foster care home.

A family AFC is a home that serves six or less residents and the provider lives in the home.

A small AFC serves 12 or less residents, while a large AFC serves 13 to 20 residents.

A congregate AFC is a licensed type, which is no longer issued in the state of Michigan. However, there are still some homes that have this type of license. If they do, they are serving 21 or more residents.

With all these abbreviations and acronyms, it probably feels like you’re learning your ABCs all over again.
